Extrusion Process for Transparent PET Sheets
Crystallization
PET pellets are first heated in a crystallization tower to align the molecules uniformly. This step increases the glass transition temperature of the pellets, preventing them from clumping and causing blockages in subsequent processing stages. Typically, crystallization occurs at temperatures below 149°C for a duration of 30 to 90 minutes.
Drying
Due to PET’s tendency to absorb moisture, which can degrade its properties and impact strength, thorough drying is essential before further processing. PET pellets are dried to achieve a moisture content of less than 0.005%. A dehumidifying dryer circulates hot air with a dew point below -40°C through a closed circuit into the drying hopper, ensuring effective moisture removal without compromising material integrity.
Extrusion
Crystallized and dried PET pellets are fed into the extruder for plasticization and shaping. The extruder applies heat and pressure to melt the PET pellets into a molten polymer with a defined melting point suitable for molding. Specialized barrier screws designed for PET ensure efficient processing by separating unmelted pellets and maintaining optimal shear conditions to enhance extruder performance.
Calendering and Cooling
The molten PET exits the extruder head and enters a three-roll calender for shaping and cooling. The calendering process involves passing the sheet between upper, middle, and lower rollers. The middle roller remains fixed, while the others adjust vertically to control the sheet’s thickness and smoothness. Maintaining a precise distance between the extruder head and the calendering unit ensures uniform cooling and prevents surface imperfections.
Winding
After calendering, the PET sheet passes through a traction device that guides it onto a winding spool. This process utilizes active and passive rubber rollers applying controlled pneumatic pressure to maintain sheet integrity and prevent distortion during winding. The winding stage ensures the produced sheets are uniformly wound and ready for subsequent processing or distribution.
Storage Precautions for Transparent PET Sheet
Keep them dry
PET sheets are sensitive to moisture, which can cause them to warp or develop a cloudy appearance. Store them in a dry environment with a relative humidity of less than 60%. If possible, use a dehumidifier in the storage area.
Avoid direct sunlight
UV rays can degrade the quality of PET sheets over time, causing them to yellow or become brittle. Store them in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight or other sources of UV radiation.
Stack them properly
When stacking PET sheets, make sure they're flat and evenly supported to prevent warping. Use spacers between the sheets to allow for air circulation and prevent scratching.
